Reflection
This week we covered etiquette and protocols. I found the lecture given quite thought provoking about my manners and etiquette and I reflected on whether or not in a business situation I would know all the correct protocols. As my seminar leader gave some brief examples I found I knew the main ones however was surprised when there are certain etiquettes in my own culture which I was not aware of.
We then carried out a listening exercise to practice active listening. I however found it hard to be an active listener in this exercise because the conversation was more of a factual nature which I was not familiar with. I struggled to become actively involved in the conversation because I was trying take in and remember everything being told to me.
After the session this week I looked into the assignment, made notes on what is required and to drew up a report template which I put on Brookes Virtual. I did this with the aim to encouraging communication between my virtual group members because there had been little since the initial introductions. I also wanted to designate roles within the assignment so I could start.
Plan
• Do some further research on standard business etiquettes in meetings
• Practice my active listening skills in more relax and familiar way to improve them for more formal conversations
• Check Brookes Virtual frequently for responses to my post on the discussion board

After the week 6 session I researched further into business etiquettes. This article points out a few business protocols which should be adhered to. Leonard (2004) states one example as the need to avoid physical barriers when first meeting someone. One instance of this may be when meeting in an office the need to stand up and walk round the front of the desk to greet and shake hands.
The article ‘Global harmony is their dream’ which I read after this week was quite interesting because Murray (2005) suggests that virtual working can actually have benefits when used by virtual teams because it removes or reduces some cultural barriers. I have to agree with this because when I have had only virtual communication with people in the past I have not actually realised they are from a different culture. Therefore my own experience shows that indeed virtual environments can in some cases remove all cultural barriers.
